This simple, 1-Step Homemade Shaving Cream whips up in just a few minutes and keeps your skin softer and better moisturized than store bought creams.
Homemade shaving cream has been done before – many, many times. I read countless recipes and tried a few of them before attempting my own.
But a recipe that’s this simple and this effective hasn’t been done before, as far as I know.
This shaving cream whips up in just a few minutes in a single bowl. Plus, if you shave at the very end of your shower, much of the cream remains on your skin as a moisturizer. It works beautifully – I’ve never used a commercial product that left my skin this smooth and soft!
Ready to give this easy, all-natural homemade shaving cream a try and say goodbye to dry skin and questionable chemicals that fill those commercial creams?
All you’ll need is Pure Shea Butter, Virgin Coconut Oil, and essential oils or other natural scents, and an electric mixer.
1-Step Homemade Shaving Cream
Ingredients
- 1 cup shea butter
- 1 cup virgin coconut oil mine was solid at the time of mixing
- Optional: essential oils or other natural scents I used 50 drops lavender and 30 drops of lemon*
- * Note: I initially used the zest of 1 large lemon in place of lemon oil but the scent of the zest intensified over time and was a little strong for my liking.
Instructions
- Using an electric mixer, beat all ingredients until stiff peaks form (approximately 2-3 minutes).

Tips for Making and Using Homemade Shaving Cream
- To clean your mixer and bowl after making the shaving cream, wipe as much of the mixture off as you can with paper towels before washing with soap and water.
- This makes a large batch (2-3 cups) - I prefer to store it in a large glass jar, then transfer a smaller amount to a plastic container with a lid that I can leave in the shower.
- The mixture will lose a bit of volume over time, but will remain soft and foamy.
- If you use too much, this WILL leave an oily residue in your tub/shower. I use a small amount and sometimes even turn the shower off before shaving so most of it stays on my skin rather than getting rinsed off into the tub and down the drain.

Is the cream suppose to run off your skin when applied?
No, it shouldn’t. Apply a thin layer on moist skin and it should work fine. Very wet skin will cause it to run off because the oil and water repel each other. I hope that helps!
What size container do you recommend to fit the finished product in?
Hi Bryanna,
Thanks for your question. I’d say the recipe yields about 24 oz once whipped. Of course, you could divide that among a few, smaller containers if you prefer. Hope that helps!
Would you recommend warming the shea butter prior to mixing with the coconut oil? I just made this recipe and found that the shea butter formed little lumps in the creamed mixture.
Hi Stacie. I didn’t warm the shea butter or the coconut oil, but you could definitely warm one or both ingredients slightly to soften them a little. In fact, if the clumps in your prepared cream bother you, you should be able to warm the entire mixture slightly, then re-whip it to see if that smooths it out some. Hope you enjoy it!
I was wondering if this would clog up my drain/pipes?
Thanks for your question, Heather! The shea butter is very thick and not water soluble, so it can leave a residue in the tub/drain if most of it is allowed to rinse off your skin. When I was using it regularly, I aimed to keep most of it on my skin for maximum moisturizing and minimal shower residue. Another idea would be to replace part of the shea butter with a liquid oil as Nancy suggested in the previous comment.
ok so I tried this one and found it clogged up my razor.. however if you use olive oil or grapeseed oil its works out great
Thanks for that idea, Nancy. ๐
I recently made a similar recipe of shaving cream for my husband. He liked it but he felt as if he needed to wash his face after shaving (unlike commercial shaving creams) because of the oily residue. I noticed you added arrowroot powder to your lotion recipe. Have you tried adding it to the shaving cream or do you think it would make it too dry for shaving?
Hi Maegan! Thanks for your question. I haven’t tried adding the arrowroot to this mixture, but I definitely don’t think it would make it too dry. If you still have the homemade shaving cream you made, you could certain try adding arrowroot to a small amount of it to see whether your husband liked that better.
I also wonder if using a little Witch Hazel on a cotton ball after his shave might help to gently remove a little of the moisture from the skin, while not overdrying? Let me know how it turns out!
I made this and loved it! Shaver and moisturizer all in one. Thank you for sharing!
I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed it, Becky!
I found you at the hearts for home link-up, and I have to say…I’m normally not one for making my own products. ๐ But you had me at simple & effective! I’m saving this, because I’d definitely want to try it out! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for visiting, Caroline! It’s truly, so simple & so effective! If you try it, I’d love for your to report back with your thoughts. ๐
Love this idea. I will make some to surprise the hubby when he returns. Would love it if you will consider sharing this with my readers on oil me up Wednesdays at My Lamp is Full!
Janine
Just added it to your link-up – Thanks, Janine! As a side note, the sweet smell of this blend doesn’t linger on the skin too long, but if you try out a more manly scent for the hubs, I’d love to hear which you use! ๐
Right? With each new household DIY recipe I attempt, I realize I was intimidated for no reason – nearly every one of them is so very simple! ๐
