Blue Ice Royal Butter Oil-Fermented Cod Liver Oil Blend
**Note: If you’re new to the idea of taking Cod Liver Oil, just try to ignore the words “fermented” and “liver” for a few minutes. I promise you, these capsules neither look nor taste like the mental images you probably have in your head right now! 😉 **
Alright, let’s get right to the details of this fantastic product. Cod Liver Oil has been used for centuries to promote general health and to treat infections as well as diseases of the eyes, teeth, and bones. It seems that God created this food with natural, healing properties right from the start!
Green Pasture has combined the naturally occurring benefits of Cod Liver Oil with those from high vitamin butter oil (made from cows who graze on nutrient-rich new spring grass) in a single supplement, produced without heat treatment or chemical processes (both of which can significantly damage nutrients).
The result is truly the best Cod Liver Oil on the market, offering a unique and healthy blend of synergistic nutrients that just can’t be found anywhere else!
Key Nutrients in Blue Ice Royal:
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
It is widely known that the Western diet lacks adequate Omega-3 fats. Increasing intake of these helps combat inflammation, which is increasingly recognized as a root cause of poor health and many chronic diseases.
Vitamin D deficiency is widespread and has been linked to depression, impaired immune function, hormone disruption, diabetes, asthma, autism, cancer, and other chronic conditions. It works synergistically with Vitamin A.
Like vitamin D, Vitamin A intakes in the Western world fall below recommended levels. Preformed Vitamin A is only found in animal foods such as liver, egg yolks, and pastured dairy products. Vitamin A is an antioxidant that works in conjunction with vitamin D to assist in hormone balance as well as to promote lung, liver, and kidney health.
This vitamin is sometimes called “the X factor” and is different than Vitamin K1 (known for its role in blood clotting). K2 plays important roles in infant growth and development, cardiovascular and nervous system health, and the health of teeth and bones. It synergizes with Vitamins A and D.
Fermented Cod Liver Oil FAQs
Q: Can’t you get these nutrients from eating a healthy, whole foods diet?
A: I’m the first to recommend healthy eating as our primary source of nutrition. I only rarely recommend supplements, but I truly believe this is a product from which many, many of us stand to benefit.
This single supplement provides high concentrations of some of the most difficult nutrients to obtain from foods, and provides them in a form that is remarkably close to the original whole food state in which God designed them.
Q: Why is Cod Liver Oil Better Than Regular Fish Oil?
A: Traditional fish oils are highly processed and heated at very high temperatures, destroying many of the naturally occurring vitamins and leaving high concentrations of a few individual fatty acids to be bottled up and sold. As a result, these products generally do not contain natural vitamin A, D, or K2. Individual nutrients in concentrations that do not reflect God’s original design generally lead to poor metabolism and, in some cases, toxicities.
Unlike fish oil, Blue Ice Royal Butter Oil/Fermented Cod Liver Oil Blend (as well as other Cod Liver Oils produced by Green Pasture) are not heated and therefore preserve their original nutrient profile extremely well. Hence, the naturally occurring vitamins in their respective concentrations help maximize each other’s action and protect from toxicity at the same time.
Q: Why Fermented?
Fermentation is a method of preserving the naturally occurring nutrients, versus high heat methods of processing which damage nutrients. The result is a healthier supplement that’s easier for the body to digest and utilize.
Q: Does it taste “fishy”?
Nope. I’ve taken a lot of fish oil capsules in my time and, of all the brands I’ve tried, this one has the least amount of fishy odor and after taste of any of them! I was skeptical myself at first (it’s fermented after all!). But I literally never taste them going down…or coming back up afterward!
It helps to take these at the beginning of a meal that contains a moderate amount of fat (this will improve breakdown and utilization of the capsules) – I take them with both breakfast and dinner daily.
Q: Who Should Consider Taking It?
I believe this would be a healthy supplement for many individuals. But, those who would most greatly benefit are those in one (or more) of the following categories:
• Women, especially of childbearing age (Including pregnant/breastfeeding)
• Those with a history of low fat dieting
• Former vegetarians
• Individuals with hormone abnormalities (e.g., thyroid, adrenal, pituitary, or reproductive hormone imbalance)
• Individuals struggling with infertility
• Individuals struggling with depression (Consult with a provider first if on medication for this)
• Individuals with decreased immune function
• Individuals with allergies and/or eczema
• Individuals with inflammatory conditions
• Individuals with poor gut health
• Individuals with heart disease
• Individuals with diabetes
• Individuals with cancer
As always, consult with your healthcare provider to determine whether this supplement is right for you.
Q: How Much Should I Take?
I take 2 capsules twice daily with the first few bites of a fat-containing meal to improve absorption of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, and K2 and to reduce the risk of “fish burps.”
The manufacturer published the following dose recommendations on their web site:
• Adults and children over 12 yrs old: 3-6 capsules/day
• Pregnant and nursing women: 9-12 capsules/day
Consult with your healthcare provider for more personalized recommendations.
Q: Can Children Take It?
Yes! Obviously, the capsule form isn’t appropriate for young children, but Green Pasture does sell this particular blend in gel form and other products in gel or liquid oil form. These can be given to children in in a spoon, or stirred into a beverage. I’ve tasted every flavor of gel offered and, I must admit, the flavor of the gels is distinct and would require some getting used to for most kids.
Here are a few ideas for making Cod Liver Oil more palatable for kids:
1. Refrigerate the oil/gel (reduces the smell and taste)
2. Have them hold their nose (reduces the smell and taste)
3. Have a few sips of water or juice ready for them to drink immediately after.
4. Stir liquid oil doses into a few spoonfuls of juice, applesauce, etc. to dilute their flavor.
5. Start small! Begin with a half or even a quarter dose and gradually increase to the full amount.
In addition to the unique blend of nutrients that I believe to be very beneficial for children, I love that Green Pasture does not use any artificial or natural flavors in their products – only essential oils. That’s yet another quality I’ve not seen from other companies.
Q: Are There Any Reasons I Should Not Take This Supplement?
All cod liver oils contains fish and potentially shellfish products (shellfish content depends on the diet of the cod, so any amount would be minuscule but might be important for those with severe shellfish allergies).
This blend also contains dairy from the butter oil. Since it contains the oil portion only, neither milk proteins (e.g., casein) nor sugars (e.g., lactose) should be present. Those with severe dairy allergies should take caution, but others with only mild intolerances will likely be unaffected.
If you have preexisting medical conditions or are taking prescription medications, seek medical counsel before beginning this or other dietary supplements.
Q: What is the shelf life of this product?
Unopened containers are good for approximately 2 years after the Manufacture Date listed on the label. Once opened, they’ll last for about 6 months unrefrigerated or longer if stored in the refrigerator.
