Cheap and easy salmon burgers made with canned salmon and a few staple ingredients. Ready in only 15 minutes for a simple and healthy weeknight meal high in omega-3’s. (Gluten free option)
I recommend clients eat wild caught fish and seafood 2-4 times weekly. But most people are intimidated by fresh fish, and many don’t love paying for it either.
Well, these are the perfect solution!
Salmon burgers. Salmon patties. Salmon cakes….Whatever you call them, you’ll love them!
Why You’ll Love these Easy Salmon Burgers
There are so many great things about these simple salmon burgers – here are a few:
- They’re easy! It doesn’t get much easier than mixing everything in a single bowl in just a few minutes?
- They’re fast! Start to finish, these take around 15 minutes. Not many dinner recipes can say that (except maybe my 15 minute Herby Parmesan Crusted Salmon!)
- They’re healthy! We all need more omega-3’s in our life, and wild caught salmon is one of the top sources. Salmon is also a good source of protein, selenium, B12, and niacin (B3).
- They’re affordable! Fish is known for its price tag, but canned salmon is one of the most affordable ways to buy fish. I buy it at Costco (around $15.00 for 6 cans, which means the salmon for this entire recipe only costs $5.00!)
- They’re great left over! I usually double the recipe so it feeds us for two nights.
- They’re versatile! These are fantastic on a bun, over a salad, or just as they are, topped with a little homemade tartar sauce (If I’m serving them on a bun, I make 4 larger patties, around 4″ diameter each).
Basically, that leaves no excuses for not eating more fish! ๐
How to Make Easy Salmon Burgers Step by Step
First, break up the salmon with a fork, then add the rest of the ingredients and mix. Form into 4-6 patties, then fry in a skillet for 3-5 minutes each side.
Serve any way you like – as a stand alone salmon cake, on top of a salad, or on a bun!
Tips for Making Easy Salmon Burgers
- For gluten free, use gluten free Panko crumbs.
- These salmon burgers can be served on a bun, but are also great by themselves or topped with tartar sauce.
- This recipe is easy to double – I double it every time I make it so we have enough for two nights!
- Leftover patties can be reheated in the microwave, or covered with foil in a 375 degree oven for around 5-7 minutes.
- To spice these up, add some ground cayenne or your favorite Cajun seasoning!
Great Salmon Burger Toppings
- Tartar sauce (my favorite!)
- Cole slaw
- Guacamole
- Sriracha aioli
- Pineapple salsa
Easy Salmon Burgers 15 minutes
Ingredients
- 2 cans Wild caught canned salmon, drained (6 oz each)
- 1 1/2 cups Panko bread crumbs (gluten free Panko crumbs work great too!)
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup avocado oil mayonnaise
- 3/4 tsp garlic powder
- 3/4 tsp onion powder
- 3/4 tsp sea salt
- 3/4 tsp smoked paprika
- 1/2 tsp dried dill
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
- 1/4 cup Avocado oil (or enough to generously cover the bottom of your skillet)
Instructions
- Place the avocado oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- While oil is heating, empty the 2 cans of drained salmon into a large mixing bowl and use a fork to break any large chunks into small, uniform pieces. Add the remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly.
- Once oil is just hot (just hot enough to spatter a bit when you flick a little water into it), use about 1/6 of the mixture to form a patty with your hands. As you form them, place each patty around the skillet and allow to cook for 3-5 minutes on each side. They're ready to flip when the bottoms are nicely browned and have a slight crisp. Once flipped, allow them to cook on the other side for another 3-5 minutes.
- Transfer the cooked patties to a paper towel lined plate until ready to serve.
Notes
- For gluten free, use gluten free Panko crumbs.
- These salmon burgers can be served on a bun, but are also great by themselves or topped with a little tartar sauce.
- This recipe is easy to double - I double it every time I make it so we have enough for two nights!
- Leftover patties can be reheated in the microwave, or covered with foil in a 375 degree oven for around 5-7 minutes.
- To spice these up, add some ground cayenne or your favorite Cajun seasoning!

Love this recipe, what a great idea for a mid week dinner. So easy and healthy! This will be a big hit.
I love 15 minute dinners, but they are often quite unhealthy too so this is a great change of pace, fantastic!
Definitely! I often try to make more so we have them to add to salads for lunch the next day too!
We used to have these all the time growing up, I need to start making them myself. Also, I have never used avocado oil, I need to look into that for something better to use than canola.
Hope you enjoy them, Jere!
