Ultimate Homemade Hot Chocolate Labeled

Over the weekend, we made the Thanksgiving-to-Christmas transition, finishing off leftover turkey and doing a little Christmas decorating. I love everything about the Christmas season - the music, the decorations, the cold weather, the talk of Jesus, the gift-giving - and now, this ultimate homemade hot chocolate recipe!

Ultimate Hot Chocolate with Maple-Vanilla Whipped Cream

I created it somewhat accidentally when I offered to make hot chocolate after dinner, then puttered around in the kitchen mixing and tasting and mixing some more. What we ended up with was, well...fabulous.

The room went silent as we all sipped and "mmm'd" our way through the cream-topped cocoa. My husband's reaction went something like this:

First sip. "Mmm. Man, that's good!"

Second sip. "MMMM."

Another. "I think that's the best hot chocolate I've ever had."

Sip. Sip. Long pause...Sip.

"I'm not even a chocolate person."  Sip. Sip. "And that whipped cream is amazing!"

Last long sip. "That's the best hot chocolate I've ever had."

Even the toddler was hooked - "moh, moh, moh," he'd say, sporting the cutest whipped cream mustache ever, and smacking his little lips as he went from person to person to beg another taste.

And so a new favorite holiday beverage was born.

I think you'll love it too. One sip and you can almost hear a fire crackling, Christmas carols playing, and snow softly drizzling down in the background. It truly is the perfect winter drink...even for the one who's "not a chocolate person!"

I will confess that I had run out of pure maple syrup that first night, so I used powdered sugar instead. I've since made it with maple syrup though, and it was still excellent. If you opt for powdered sugar, you'll need less than the amount of maple syrup called for in the recipes below.

White chocolate fans will love this recipe too. I'm an equal opportunity chocolate consumer, so I tried both before deciding my favorite was a 50/50 blend of the dark and white chocolate.
